Helping Children Who Might Find Christmas Difficult
Dec 20, 2025
As Christmas approaches, many parents find themselves wondering how their child will cope with the festive season.
While Christmas can be a magical time for lots of children, it can also bring extra emotional challenges for others. Changes to routine, heightened expectations, family gatherings, and reminders of loss or change can all feel overwhelming — particularly for children who are sensitive, anxious, neurodivergent, or navigating difficult circumstances.
At this time of year, I wanted to reshare a video from the blog archive that remains especially relevant and supportive for families. In it, I talk parents through a range of common situations that can make Christmas harder for children, including separation or divorce, bereavement, anxiety, and other emotional or developmental needs.
In the video, I share simple, practical guidance to help you:
-
understand what might be happening emotionally for your child
-
respond with reassurance and compassion
-
reduce pressure and unrealistic expectations
-
support your child to feel safer and more settled during the festive period
If you’re feeling unsure about how best to support your child this Christmas, I hope this feels reassuring and helpful.

And if you know another parent who might benefit from this support, please do feel free to share it with them.
